Biography
Abeje Y. Mersha is currently a professor of Smart Mechatronics. He obtained his Master’s and PhD in the field of robotics and mechatronics from the University of Twente. He is currently leading the Smart Mechatronics and Robotics (SMART) research group of Saxion, which is the largest research group of Saxion (40+ research engineers with over 3 million yearly turnover) that focuses on the development of innovative and applicable technologies in the field of Robotics, Mechatronics and Artificial Intelligence while examining the effectiveness of the associated Systems Engineering approaches. Since 2017, Abeje has (co-) initiated, acquired, and executed multiple international as well as national and regional public-private funded projects with ~ 10.2 million euros for the SMART Mechatronics and Robotics research group. Some of the notable projects include Integral robotization, Flying hand, Holland Hybrid Heart and Production Process for Photonic Point-of-care Cartridges (4PC). Within the scope of his projects, Abeje-together with his colleagues- has developed various innovative and applicable technologies that include collaborative manipulation, optimal path planning, autonomous navigation, and safe physical interaction control of robots. Several of his works have led to new prototypes and the corresponding results have been published in peer reviewed publications and professional journals.
